Clearing Landscaping or Tree Debris in Miami? Here Is the Dumpster You Need for the Branches, Root Balls and Sod

    Published October 23, 2026 · Updated October 23, 2026

A tree or two removed with the stump ground out usually fits a 20-yard dumpster; a sod tear-out, a full landscaping overhaul, or storm-damaged trees usually needs a 30-yard or a scheduled swap-out, because wet soil and green waste hit a truck's legal weight limit long before the container looks full. Tell us what's coming out, root balls and dirt included, and we size it on the spot.

What size dumpster do I need for landscaping or tree debris?

It depends more on weight than on how big the pile looks. A couple of trimmed branches or one flower bed cleanout is usually a junk removal pickup, not a container. One tree removed with the stump ground out fits a 20 yard. A sod tear-out, a multi-tree removal, or a full yard redo usually needs a 30 yard or a scheduled swap-out, because topsoil, root balls and wet green waste are dense enough to hit a truck's road weight limit while the box still looks half empty.

Why yard debris fills a dumpster faster than you'd expect

Green waste is deceptive. Freshly cut branches, wet sod, and root balls pulled out of Miami's clay-heavy soil carry a lot of water weight, and the truck hauling your container has a legal road weight limit that has nothing to do with how full the box looks. A 20 yard half full of wet dirt can already be at its weight limit while the walls are still mostly empty. Tell us the weight-heavy parts, dirt, sod, root balls, concrete edging, when you book, and we size the container by weight instead of guessing by volume; see our dumpster weight limits guide for how we figure that.

What Miami-Dade's free yard waste pickup actually covers

Miami-Dade curbside collection takes trimmed branches and palm fronds cut to the length the county specifies, as regular yard trash. It does not take stumps, root balls, sod, bulk dirt, fencing, or retaining wall debris, and it is sized for normal household yard work, not a landscaping crew clearing a job site. The county's separate bulky waste program (two free pickups a year) has its own limits too; see our Miami-Dade bulky waste pickup guide for exactly what qualifies. After a storm, downed trees and limbs fall under special debris collection with its own sorting rules; our hurricane debris prep guide covers how that works and how to speed up a private haul instead of waiting on the county.

Tree removal, stump grinding and root balls

A stump ground out in place leaves a pile of grindings that's bulkier than it is heavy, easy for a 20 yard. A root ball pulled whole out of the ground is the opposite: compact but dense, often wet, and heavier than the same size pile of branches. If the tree sat near a driveway, patio or pool deck, we put boards under the container's rails before delivery so a loaded dumpster doesn't crack pavers or stress a slab that wasn't built for that weight. Tell us how many trees and whether the stumps are coming out whole or ground, and we'll size the container and the delivery spot together.

Booking a dumpster for a landscaping or tree job

Give us the scope: how many trees, whether sod or topsoil is part of the job, and whether it's a planned renovation or storm cleanup. Same-day delivery is available across Miami-Dade and Broward depending on container availability. A full landscaping overhaul that runs more than a few days, or storm cleanup with more debris than one container holds, usually works better as a scheduled swap-out: a full container leaves and an empty one drops the same visit instead of work stalling while you wait on a pickup. FAQ

What size dumpster do I need to remove a tree?

A 20 yard covers one tree with the stump ground out. Multiple trees, a root ball pulled whole, or a full landscaping overhaul usually needs a 30 yard or a scheduled swap-out because the weight climbs fast.

Can I put dirt and sod in a dumpster?

Yes, but tell us the amount when you book. Sod and topsoil are heavy enough that a 20 yard can hit its weight limit well before the container looks full, so we size it by weight, not just volume.

Does Miami-Dade pick up tree branches and yard waste for free?

Yes, for normal residential amounts of trimmed branches and palm fronds through curbside yard trash collection. It does not cover stumps, root balls, sod, dirt, or landscaping-crew volumes of debris.

Do you take tree stumps and root balls?

Yes. Ground stump grindings are bulky but light; a whole root ball pulled out of the ground is compact but dense and often wet. Tell us which one and how many trees so we size the container correctly.

How much yard debris can a 20 yard dumpster hold?

By volume, a lot; by weight, less than people expect once dirt, sod or root balls are involved. We size by weight when any of those are part of the load, which is often what decides between a 20 and a 30.

What about debris from multiple trees after a storm?

That usually needs a 30 yard or a scheduled swap-out: a full container leaves and an empty one arrives the same visit, so cleanup keeps moving instead of waiting on a single pickup.
