20 Yard Dumpster Dimensions: How Big It Really Is, What Fits, and Where It Sits on a Miami Driveway

    Published 2026-09-18

20 yard dumpster dimensions: about 22 ft long, 8 ft wide, 4.5 ft tall, six pickup loads. What fits, weight limits, and driveway clearance in Miami.

    The numbers first

    • A 20-yard roll-off holds 20 cubic yards of material. Ours measure about 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4.5 feet tall on the outside. Picture a full-size pickup bed emptied into it six times: that is roughly what it holds, level to the rim.
    • The 22-foot length is the number that matters for placement. It is the same footprint as our 30-yard; the 30 is simply taller (about 6 feet). So if a 20 fits on your driveway, a 30 does too, and the only thing that changes is how high you have to lift debris over the wall.
    • The walls on a 20 are low enough that most people can toss bags and boards over the side without a ladder. For heavy or awkward items (a cast iron tub, a sectional), we open the rear door and you walk it in.

What actually fits in a 20 yard dumpster

    • A full kitchen gut: cabinets, countertops, tile, the old appliances, drywall from one or two walls.
    • A single-layer shingle roof tear-off up to about 2,000 square feet. Tile roofs are heavier: read the weight section before you order for a tile tear-off.
    • A two- or three-bedroom cleanout: furniture, mattresses, boxes, a garage worth of shelving and yard tools.
    • A bathroom remodel plus a flooring job in the same week, or a fence replacement with the old panels and posts (concrete footings count as heavy material).
    • What does not fit: a whole-house cleanout with three or more bedrooms of furniture plus a garage, or a renovation that runs for weeks producing mixed debris. That is 30-yard territory, or a 20 with a scheduled swap-out.

Weight is the limit you hit before volume

    • Twenty cubic yards of couches and drywall is light. Twenty cubic yards of concrete, dirt, roof tile or wet soil is not: the truck would be over the legal road weight long before the box is full. That is why heavy material is priced by weight as well as volume, and why we will tell you to keep concrete or dirt to a partial load and schedule a swap instead of topping it off.
    • Roofing is the case people get wrong most often. Asphalt shingles from a 2,000 square foot roof sit comfortably in a 20. The same roof in barrel tile can weigh two to three times as much, so we size tile jobs by weight, not by square footage. Tell us the roof type when you call and we will size it right.
    • Our post on dumpster weight limits in Miami goes through the heavy materials one by one.

Where a 20 yard sits on a Miami driveway

    • You need about 22 feet of straight, flat space for the container and about 60 feet of straight approach for the truck to back in and tilt it off. Overhead, the truck needs roughly 23 feet of clearance while it sets the box, so low branches, a carport roof or a power drop over the driveway are the things to look at before delivery day.
    • Pavers, stamped concrete and older driveways: ask for boards under the rails. It is a five-minute step on our side and it keeps the steel from marking or cracking the surface.
    • Keep the container fully on your own property. A box that hangs over the swale or the sidewalk needs a right-of-way permit in most Miami-Dade cities, and it is the fastest way to get a visit from code enforcement. Our permit guide has the rules by city.
    • HOA communities: most boards are fine with a container on your own driveway for a defined window. Tell them the dates, keep it off the street, and ask us for the same-day pickup once you are done.

20 or 30? The quick test

    • Pick the 20 when the job is one room, one roof, one garage, or one weekend. Pick the 30 when it is the whole house, a renovation measured in weeks, or a commercial build-out. If you are between the two, a 20 with a scheduled swap-out is usually cheaper than an oversized box that goes out half empty, and it keeps heavy loads legal.
    • Still not sure? Text a photo of the pile or the room to (305) 986-0692 and we will tell you which size and give you the full price before delivery. We only run 20s and 30s, so if the job is smaller than a 20, we will point you to our junk removal crew instead.

    FAQ

What are the exact dimensions of a 20 yard dumpster?

Ours are about 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4.5 feet tall on the outside, holding 20 cubic yards, or roughly six full-size pickup truck loads. Containers vary a little by maker, so measure your driveway for at least 22 feet of straight space.

Will a 20 yard dumpster fit in a standard driveway?

Yes, on almost any standard Miami driveway. It needs about 22 feet of flat space, 60 feet of straight approach for the truck, and 23 feet of overhead clearance while it is being set down. We put boards under the rails to protect pavers and concrete.

How much weight can a 20 yard dumpster hold?

It depends on the material more than the box. Household debris and shingles rarely hit the limit; concrete, dirt, roof tile and wet soil do, well before the container is full. Tell us what you are loading and we size the job by weight, with a swap-out if needed, so the truck stays legal on the road.

Is a 20 yard dumpster big enough for a roof?

For a single-layer shingle roof up to about 2,000 square feet, yes. For a tile roof or a larger footprint, we size by weight, which may mean a 30-yard or a 20 with a scheduled swap. Tell us the roof type and square footage when you call.
